European Ph.D on Social Representations and Communication

Scientific Programme

The Summer School is organized by the Erasmus network ICP-95-I-3074/14, co-ordinated by Prof. Annamaria Silvana de Rosa, University of Rome "La Sapienza", and by the Department of Social Psychology, University of Helsinki, in association with the Finnish Graduate School of Psychology.

The goal of the summer school is to familiarize students with the latest theoretical, empirical and methodological developments in the study of social representations and thus help them to plan and carry out their doctoral research projects. The Summer School will also provide an opportunity for young scholars from different European universities to make contacts and initiate collaborative research. Some on-going cross-national research projects will also be discussed. The Summer school is planned to be the first step on the way toward a European Ph.D. in Social Representations and Communication.

The summer School consists of workshops, lectures, and independent work. The preliminary topics of the workshops are:

  • relationships of Theory of Social Representations to other theories;
  • culture and social representations;
  • net strange areas in the study of social representations;
  • new methods in the study of social representations
  • diffusion, transmission and generation of social representations through different media: the case of advertising;
  • social representations in organizational contexts;
  • multi-dimensional identity and the social representations of the European Union.

The summer school is primarily intended for postgraduate students interested in theory of social representations. In special cases, advanced graduate students working on a Master's Thesis related to social representations may be accepted as students.

The venue of the summer school is the Lahti Centre of Adult Education, affiliated with the University of Helsinki. Lahti is a town of about 100,000 inhabitants, located 120 Km north of Helsinki. The participants will stay in double rooms in a hotel at a walking distance from the Adult Education Centre.
